Collection Development Policy

A.   Vision and Mission Statement

Our VISION is that the Library/Media Center is the heart of the school where staff and students have access to resources in a safe, open, and welcoming environment.

The MISSION of the LHS Stafford-Fairchild Library/Media Center is to empower students to become independent, life-long readers, learners, and critical thinkers who become 21st Century leaders, connected with the future and the world.

B.   Goals and Objectives of the Library Media Center

          1. Provide and maintain a current collection that is diverse in format and content and that that                 supports and enhances the curriculum as well as the pursuit of individual interests.

          2. Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and others to ensure that a variety of resources is                 available for patrons to support learning

          3. Provide materials that encourage an appreciation for diversity and various worldly                                   perspectives

          4. Provide materials in various formats and difficulty levels

C.   Responsibility for Collection Management

The library media center specialist will have the primary responsibility for selecting materials              for the library media center.  The patrons, including students, administration, teachers and                  parents, are encouraged to offer recommendations of materials to be considered for inclusion              into the collection.

D.  Collection Methodologies

            1.  Patrons may check out books and materials for a period of two-weeks.  Items may be                               rechecked following this period, unless a hold has been placed by another patron.

            2.  No fines will be assessed for late materials.  However, if books or materials are lost or                            damaged, patrons are responsible for replacement costs.

            3.  Inventory of all books, materials and equipment will be completed at the end of each                              school year.

E.  Evaluative Criteria for Materials Selection

The number one criteria for materials selection is the needs of students, staff and                                    administration. If a potential item does not meet the learning needs of students, that item will              not be added to the library collection. Items may meet direct classroom learning needs, add to              the professional ability of teachers, or otherwise contribute to learning standards set forth by                the American Library Association's Standards for the 21st Century Learner and the American              Association of School Librarians Standards.

Selection of both print and electronic materials will be selected using the following criteria:                  Appropriateness, Authority/Accuracy, Comparison to Other Works, Format & Organization,                Cost, Physical Quality, Literary Merit, and Timeliness & Sustainability.

F.  Deselection

Deselection, the act of removing materials from the library, is a necessary practice in order to                preserve the quality of the collection by removing items that are outdated, worn/ broken or no              longer needed. This also frees up space for materials that will better serve the patrons. The                    Librarian Media Specialist will remove items as needed throughout the year.  At the conclusion            of each school year, library staff will conduct a large scale weeding project prior to inventory.

Items will be removed if they are: misleading or obsolete, damaged or severely worn,                              superseded by a newer version or the collection no longer needs the item.  Weeded books will              be provided free to staff and students.

G.   Procedures for Handling Materials Challenges or Complaints

Liberal High School strives to uphold the principles set forth by the American Library                            Association. All complaints/ challenged material will be recorded by the Librarian Media                      Specialist for reference purposes and reported to the principal. Patrons wishing to formally                  challenge materials may pick up a copy of the school district’s Challenged Material Policy and              Form in the library. The form must be completed and submitted to the Librarian Media                          Specialist before the material will be considered for removal.
